MAZDA RX7 FD3S – the collectors choice

Arguably the best designed car of its the time, the FD series delivered futuristic styling and a drive like no other. The third generation of the RX7 was introduced in the early 90’s and went all the way through to 2002. The final year of production saw the release of several limited edition models and we would like to find out which really was the cream of the crop from a collectors angle.

To keep it short and simple, we have narrowed it down to the three most desired / rare / expensive models.

1. SPIRIT R – Type A

This 2002 two seat model had all the features of other limited editions + some nice bonuses like red trim Recaro front seats. Not much to consider here. Just the second hand value of these cars now indicate that they are the true collectible. We have seen recent prices soar up to about AUD $35,000 landed and complied.

2. SPIRIT R – Type B

Love the SPIRIT R – Type A but want to ride with your mates / family? No worries. Just buy the Type B.

3. Type R Bathurst R

Some may argue that this car is more collectible than the SPIRIT R Type A and some may be right. The Bathurst R ( different to the Bathurst ) boasted a factory option of getting a carbon fibre fitted interior including inlays, gear knob, hand brake and certain areas of the dash. These cars like the two above also fetch premium prices at auction houses but are not as often seen.

We believe you are doing well if you already own any one of the many variants of an FD3S, however if you are looking to purchase one in the near future we strongly recommend you consider the three models above.
